To surmise the day's journey I would have to say this: what I saw in November 2004 was worse.

At that time a small handful of revitalization projects were underway, but they were few and far between the cold reality of state of the rest of Detroit; and I'm referring to square miles here and not simply the "downtown" area, where most of the media's attention falls.

Today far more areas were either starting a much needed cleanup or were well into one than last year. And, I noted a couple of real winners completely erased.

It was certainly good to see progress being made in areas I never thought would see any. Gratiot Ave., as with many of the main arteries supplying means into the downtown area have received their share of a "Super Bowl" fix. But it's that fact itself I personally find troubling.  Perhaps it's the expected increased revenue from "the big game" that provoked the city to tidy up a bit. I see it much the same as cleaning house only for expected guests, which really just may be too bad for me.

I suppose the focus here has been to offer a view of the city given a relatively short span of time in which to do it. Other than the Heidelberg Project, I spent no more time in specific areas than others; just looking around... and resurrecting a couple of year-old memories for no other reason than curiosity.
